I have no idea if this is true or not, I seem to recall reading somewhere that the producers briefly considered doing exactly this for the last episode - revealing that the ENTIRE SERIES was actually just Benny Russell’s story.
Has anyone else heard this. Again, I have absolutely no idea if this is true or not.
This would have elicited in me a very particular kind of cold and bitter rage.
I did wonder if Benny Russell was real though. Sisko seeing his story seemed to me to be Prophet shenanigans, but maybe it wasn’t one-sided. Maybe Benny Russell was one of Sisko’s ancestors and the Prophets showed him Sisko as well? Hence - “You are the dreamer, and the dream.”
"The producers also toyed with the idea of ending the series (in "What You Leave Behind”) with a shot of Benny Russell sitting outside a television sound stage holding a script for “Deep Space Nine” – essentially making the series, and possibly the whole of Star Trek, either a dream or a prophecy from the Bajoran Prophets – but this idea was ultimately rejected. (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Companion) Ironically, Herbert Rossoff (Quark) comments in this episode that making the whole story a dream would demean the entire story.”
Memory Alpha - Far Beyond the Stars (episode)
Incidentally, don’t the lyrics of “Beyond the Sea” work rather well as Sisko, off with the Prophets, thinking of Kasidy and anticipating his return to her?
In the novelverse, Benny Russell is real as I recall. And his story isn’t finished, Nor is K.C. Hunters…
