Don’t forget that Rhodey replaces the palladium core with no direction from Tony whatsoever. He knows where the extra cores are, pops out the old one, puts a new one in, and hands it off to Tony without a word. Which means that he’s worked with the arc reactor before. Which means that Tony explicitly trusts Rhodey. With his life.
