what is is with the late 70s and early 80s and the fascination with orange?

TMP Rewatch Kirk's Quarters are a bit 2001 - a bit clockwork orange but mostly 70s everything's so bare too - which makes sense with the enterprise being a new ship and kirk just got command back and then there's the padded hallway which I guess indicates officer country?
