This just comes out so assholish, as if Riker’s making fun of Geordi and Data for trying to make art when Geordi can’t see naturally and Data isn’t human. I like their painting. Plus, in the context of this episode, Riker spends the first few minutes wandering around the ship looking for something to do with his downtime while the Bynars are upgrading the computer and pooh-poohing everything he finds his friends are doing.
Normally I think of Will Riker as a lovely person, warm, friendly, caring, someone who loves his community and is loved in return because he’s so interested in everyone and he knows all the kids’ names and he just wants to make sure everyone can do something that’s meaningful to them and have individual satisfaction as a valued part of the whole. Like, can you imagine what a lovely captain he’s going to be? Strong and authoritative on the bridge, but also the guy who takes his Pomeranian Worf for walkies and stops to let each kid they meet pet the dog, and the guy who plays Santa Claus every year at the crew Christmas party.
This bit of Will Riker is such a buttmunch!
Riker is written as such an uptight assholes at time on Season 1. It looks like they tried to write him a someone full of wonder at the universe but it ends looking like “An Idiot abroad” but mean.
