people who hate on the remastered version of rotj adding hayden christensen’s anakin at the end as a force ghost completely miss the point that lucas was trying to make. throughout the entirety of of the trilogy obi-wan keeps saying that darth vader ‘killed’ anakin skywalker, and obi wan tells luke that his father was a great jedi (even tho obi knows that anakin IS darth vader.)
like, in rotj when obi wan says ‘well from a different perspective, darth vader killed the man i knew [as your father]’. when the redemption happens at the end, when darth vader saves luke from palpatine and returns to the light side, he is effectively returning to the man he was before he became darth vader.
that’s why his force ghost is hayden christensen. because it is a visual representation of the man he was before he became darth vader, and the man anakin returned to by saving luke before he died.
okay but anakin the jedi wasn’t a great dude honestly, and he was dark side af way before he got his Shame Helmet. Anakin was brooding, aggressive, arrogant, and he literally massacred an entire village plus a roomful of children. That’s why thematically it didn’t work, the movies weren’t strong enough to support the idea of Anakin as a great jedi. Most if not all moments where we might sympathize with anakin, or associate him with the Light are in Phantom Menace, when he was a kid and not played by Hayden Christensen.
also lets be real. this edit came out in 2004, Clone Wars came out in 2002 and that’s when people were pretty much like “oh okay these movies suck. they just….aren’t good.“ at least a part of why Lucas did this was out of spite. it was a way of saying “no these movies are real and they’re here forever and fuck you for being mad at my other changes too“
also look at it jfc

like it just?? looks bad??? they literally spliced hayden’s head onto shaw’s body. and b/c we have no warm emotional feelings for anakin (which is why no one was crushed to see him gets his arms and legs chopped off) he just looks out of place.
long story short: the prequels are poorly made, they’re just not good.
and that’s not the most egregious thing in the ongoing remastering horrors (remember kids, George Lucas had already meddled with RotJ before the prequels came out). I mean I can sort of ignore this as trying to say hey look the old guy well anakin was never old he was this guy here.
No what gets me is that he has to VOICE VADER’s DECISION TO HELP HIS SON with HIS TERRIBLE Revenge of the Sith NOOO Scream.
Originally Vader’s switch is done wordlessly as his son suffers Palpatine’s onslaught. But rather than let the scene stand on its own he adds this shit
I cringe. I cringe so bad I have to turn off the movie.
