Disappointed at the Human Rights Campaign
So Hillary Clinton just received a major endorsement from the Human Rights Campaign and it’s a disgrace.
Clinton supported the Defense of Marriage Act which “prevented the federal government from recognizing any marriages between gay or lesbian couples for the purpose of federal laws or programs, even if those couples are considered legally married by their home state.”
In 2004, Hillary still was against gay marriage by saying that she believes marriage is a “…sacred bond between a man and a woman.”
So I am happy that she now supports gay marriage and that she changed (or flip-flopped) her position. But can we please bring to light how Bernie Sanders has been an avid supporter of gay rights and civil rights since the 1970s?
Here’s a great video of Bernie Sanders defending gay soldiers in 1995.
How is it fair that the Human Rights Campaign supports a candidate that just recently changed her position on gay rights while we have a candidate that has been consistently fighting for human rights throughout all of his career?
Chad Griffin, President of the HRC since 2012, was an aide in the Clinton White House. And if you check their major corporate sponsors, you’ll find Goldman-Sachs, who incidentally paid Hillary about $600,000 in speaking fees last year.
These could be coincidences or it could be the reason that they supported Hillary, who they gave a Congressional Scorecard rating of 89%, when they could have supported Bernie, who they gave 100%.
It’ll be interesting to see Mr. Griffin will continue to hold his position with the HRC when donations from a large number individuals cease because they’re sending the money they were sending to the organization to Bernie’s campaign instead.
