Beware of Possible Spoilers
I’m not even sure where to begin with this. The plot structure between this and The Romulan War has some similarities here and then (desperate situation, epilogue) however the world-building (or galaxy-building) is explored in greater detail here. The Mirror Universe will never quite look the same again.
This is not a book to jump into. In fact You need to have read all the MU fiction that has come out in the past few years, along with DS9 S8 as it is mirror-heavy toward the back half of the season but it has a rewarding payoff for sticking with it for so long. Although a good knowledge of Excalibur helps it is not necessary.
- Miles and Keiko are both adorably cute and inevitably linked together across both universes.
- Mirror Eddington feels really interesting, especially given that this Eddington isn’t all that different from ours either.
- Although it will never been confused with our universe at the end of the Book several people are where they should be, Picard, Ezri, Opaka…
- Meanwhile the path of Mirror Duras is very satisfying
- Mirror Dukat and Damar are…Dukat and Damar.
- The Vulcan revenge. Holy fuck. the way they’re unleashed here is. How to create chaos 101.
- I want more of K'Eylerh and Barclay crimefighting. Much more.
- That final chapter before the Epilogue is very sweet
- The Epilogue opens up certain possibilities if we ever revisit the MU past this point.
- However as close to DS9 as this was I really want to get back to DS9 past The Soul Key. They’ve been teasing us through the Typhon Pact books what’s happened in the 4-5 years since then.
In short a very satisfying read and well worth the purchase. This is how it’s done.
