On the beach….
The wreck of the Greek cargo ship E Evangelia (originally the British refrigerated cargo ship Empire Strength) has been sitting off popular French’s beach, in Costineşti, Romania, since running aground there in 1968.
It’s ghostly presence is popular with tourists and photographers…..and, apparently, a decent source of revenue for the vicinity.
She had a storied life before her demise in a reputed insurance fraud case of deliberate beaching.
Starting in the depths of World War II in 1942, she valiantly served the British war effort all over the world. After the war, she was a workhorse for a multitude of different owners as a cargo vessel….again spanning the globe.
Now, with her back broken….her sides littered with graffiti….her 7,000 tons slowly returning to nature as rust consumes her….she lives on as a tourist curiosity.
And there she rests in peace….on the beach….
