I wouldn’t write Gaeta’s character off like that so easily. He was only made bi after the show had finished wrapping, when they made the webisodes. He lost it, but not because of his sexuality.
As well, I don’t think Kara’s description is very legitimate. In Season 4 she did indeed go crazy but she certainly didn’t finish the series in a weak spot. Even though she died she kept going after no one would believe her story and she saved the remaining cast from certain death. In my opinion all of this shit that happened to her further proved her determination because she didn’t stop no matter what.
Baltar was weak. Most of the time for him it was flight instead of fight and I think if we are to look at the male/female sides and compare where the characters went throughout the series, we can’t ignore the fact that Baltar often didn’t have a backbone. He was lead around by the hand by Head!Six and without her he would have died long, long before he reached Earth.
D’Anna’s random decision to stay on Earth 1.0 was more or less an excuse to let her character go. Lucy Lawless was doing something else and she couldn’t continue with the series. I doubt that if she could have kept going, D’Anna wouldn’t have met the end she did. The writers needed something quick and easy for her to go so I wouldn’t count this situation with the rest.
Boomer was a villain. And as you said, she was a well developed character. The decision to kill her was because she was on the wrong side, and so I don’t think this belongs in the “females-are-unfairly-treated” section…
I could go on more but my point is I don’t think you should look at it from the perspective that females were poorly written towards the end, look at it like everyone was tired. Everyone wanted to give up and the males were like that too. Adama made some poor choices just for one woman he couldn’t seem to live without. It wasn’t just on Laura’s part. I wouldn’t call this deterioration, I’d call it being human. Everyone was stronger in the beginning, but that was to be expected. They weren’t used to the daily torture yet, and eventually it began to wear on them.
The descriptions are all overly simplistic, but they are simplistic to expose the somewhat terrifying logic of the show. The truth remains that all major named female characters except for three are dead by the end of that finale. I could make a similar list of the male characters with similar traits and descriptions, but the end of pretty much all of them would say “lives.” I agree that all the characters are doing crazy things, all the characters are tired, and all the characters have grown weaker. They’re getting worn down, sure. But why is it that there are only three or four real major male characters who are dead in the end, but nearly every single female—and particularly the females who had the strongest most consistent characterization—is dead?
I don’t actually think Boomer was a villain. If we’re going to take Daybreak as gospel (which I am loath to do), the only true villains in the end were Cavil and Tory Foster. Cavil because the narrative literally makes every single bad or evil thing his fault. Tory because… because… just because? Are her decisions really any more monstrous than the decisions of others? Boomer was just as complex and conflicted as any of the other Cylons. Who, we can’t forget, started this whole crazy journey by attempting to commit genocide and slaughtering billions of people. If everyone else (including Leoben for god’s sake!) can have their foibles and mistakes forgiven, why is the point blank execution of Boomer ok?
Even then The Plan did things to rehabilitate Cavil (well a version of him anyway) and flesh out Simon (loving husband and all - and yes I know it retcons a character that was somewhat important to the chief all along that hasn’t been seen then since New Caprica). All we got from Tory in The Plan was that she was driving during the bombing (successful and helping or managing a mayoral campaign) and that she was in the right place for the Cavils to see a pattern.
