The main protag on this series (at least so far) Martin, an East German youth is recruited by his aunt to the take the place of a West German aide-de-camp to a General. He looks like him and has many similar passions but doesn’t play piano so the East Germans fix that by breaking his finger (ok only spraining supposedly) so that he’s inserted into the west he can give that as an excuse. He doesn’t want to go despite the material benefits (wouldn’t you like an apartment for you and your girlfriend? a car?) and is very obviously drugged (drink your coffee). He’s taught the spycraft stuff as quickly as possible but still it’s shoddy work at best (he’s having a hell of a time picking a lock and fails a hand drop).

All of this to say I’m really enjoying it, and of course the usual early 80s music (99 luftballoons will not stop playing) and fashion
