OMG, I found the old “Mystery!” Vincent Price intro to “Six Napoleons.”

Haven’t seen the episode itself yet, but if you really want the VINTAGE stateside Granada Holmes experience, take a look at this:


You see those horizontal streaks in the image? That’s what videotape that has deteriorated due to overuse and the passage of time looks like. Vincent Price hosted Mystery! on PBS for most of the 1980s. He would introduce the evening’s episode, often offering a smattering of historical context. This time it’s about Italian immigrants in London. Warning: the 1986 version of trying to be more sympathetic to Italian immigrants than Doyle and Wilkie Collins were isn’t as sympathetic as you’d maybe think it might be.

This is how we watched British television back in the day, kids. On PBS, with hosts in tuxes telling us about it beforehand in case our American brains couldn’t handle it.
