The Shining (1980)
This was the first Stephen King novel I ever read; it was the result of a bet from my older brother - he never thought I would get through it. But I proved him wrong and my love for King novels began. I remember watching this for the first time and how I pulled the blanket up over my head during some scenes because I knew what was coming. The novel, and this movie, have had a huge impact on my love of horror.
The Shining is really interesting to me as a movie, because I don’t really see it as horror per se. It’s just too Kubrick-y to be anything but a Kubrick movie.
And maybe that’s why Stephen King has always kind of resented it : p
This is an example of a film being an extraordinary work of art that is also a terrible adaptation of an existing work.
