so apparently angels have to actually put a bit of effort in to learn languages. aziraphale knows english and japanese, but not french or mandarin. and presumably aziraphale and crowley have been learning a rolling list of languages as the years pass. do they ever lapse into them? have the perfect latin word for whatever they’re talking about that they just can’t quite get across in english? when they’re on their own, just the two of them, there’s a wild mishmash of words in everything from sumerian to old english.
and angels must have a language of their own, something they spoke before the world was created, something they still speak among themselves now. (demons, too, though 6000 years is long enough for the languages to have diverged, still mutually intelligible but now clearly different as well.)
at the same time, you cannot tell me that most angels, that gabriel, actually put in effort to learning human languages. why bother? what do they care? they probably just beam whatever they want a human to hear straight into their heads. easier that way. or there are angelic methods to instantly learn languages, but aziraphale just enjoys learning them the human way, with books and conversation.
