I love how all the characters in the Fellowship introduced as “RIVALS who HATE EACH OTHER” end up being the closest friends by the end of the trilogy.
Legolas and Gimli are the most obvious example– going from worst enemies to friends who are ready to “die side-by-side.”
Gandalf and Pippin also began the series at odds– wise old Gandalf constantly annoyed by how foolish Pippin was– but by the end of the series, they’ve grown to respect each other and become close friends.
And then there’s Aragorn and Boromir. They were introduced as bitter rivals who hated each other….. but by the end of FOTR Aragorn’s love for Boromir, and Boromir’s faith in Aragorn, ends up being what finally convinces Aragorn to accept the responsibility of saving his kingdom.

The members of the Fellowship who were introduced as just…really hating each other…all end up loving each other by the end of the story.
#this is a good post#but the idea that pippin is Gandalf’s rival is so funny to ke#*me#not bcos your logic is wrong#just the idea of gandalf (an angel who helped create the universe) being rivals w some random hobbit kid#love it
A 27 year old Hobbit kid, so he’s like 14 in our years. Gandalf, ageless demi-god-angel person, rivals with a fucking idiot 14 year old.
Amazing.
also no one had the right to put that picture of Aragorn and Boromir in there because UGH MY HEART
I’d put him more like hobbit 18 but tbh there’s not any estimate of Pippin’s age that’s not funny in this context
Pippin: *exists*
Gandalf:
