crozier’s speech at carnivale so funny cuz like up until stanley ruined the moment it was a good speech! it’s honest, it’s complimentary towards the crew, it acknowledges the trauma they’ve all been through while offering hope and a goal to work towards. it’s not one of sir john’s sugar coated For God And Country sermons, it’s still kind of blunt and crozier-y, but it’s very effective rhetoric

but from the crew’s perspective, like…this is the guy who, when previously asked to address the crowd, could only come up with “travel well.” the guy who got through sir john’s funeral by reading the eulogy that sir john had written for someone else. the guy who’s been holed up in his cabin brooding all winter, only emerging to preside over the unnecessarily brutal flogging that freaked everyone out so much they all tried to transfer to erebus. the guy who has been completely MIA for the last several weeks with “a bad case of gastritis,” and if some of the crew suspected the truth they probably figured he was done for either way

and then OUT OF NOWHERE he is crashing their weirdass party and giving the gettysburg address. and they’re all standing there, boozed to the gills, dressed up like mushrooms, staring at him like ??? who the fuck is this

YES and the revelation for james in particular, who came storming onto francis’s ship not to take his place (which he’d have been WELL JUSTIFIED in doing) but to tell him to earn it… now looking up and seeing the captain he wanted francis to be

i love both of these comments so much, especially because they are two different ways of saying the same thing, which is that fitz’s reaction to this scene is “oh my god he’s actually been capable of being a competent compassionate leader of men this entire time…..thats so hot”
