I mean Soran was supposed to be a member of Guinan's species and throughout the series they were teased as being these super powerful beings, her and Q having a stand off for one example, and he just does nothing really. Dude could have just been an old human nearing the end of his life and nothing in the story would need to change beyond maybe making him a lot younger looking, possibly even make him a child, during the Enterprise B parts of the film.
