I’ve seen others in the Trek fandom mentioning that they’ll be watching these episodes in honor of Dorothy Fontana. I’ll be doing the same. I know Journey to Babel backwards and forwards but it’s been ages since I’ve seen Yesteryear.
It was in Journey to Babel that we first learned that Spock had been bullied by other Vulcan children. I always took that as a big hint that all Vulcans experience emotions and can engage in awful behavior if they let their emotions get the better of them. And as the writers of DS9 were huge TOS fans, I appreciate that they explored this possibility in a couple of episodes.
P.S. I’ve seen some mention of “Friday’s Child” which she wrote as well. I wish we could see her original script as Roddenberry made a significant change to the story. He rewrote Julie Newmar’s character as eventually willing to become a loving mother. But Fontana said not all women want to be mothers and was going to express that in Newmar’s character. And she was willing to use her own newborn to escape the constraints of the male dominated Capellan society. That would have made a more compelling story than the one we got.
