29th August 1824 — “We left Mr Nash’s on the 16th & went to Portsmouth, where I was greatly delighted with the sight of the Dockyard. I had never been there before, nor never seen a large man of war. The Duke of Wellington met us there so that we saw every thing to perfection. [….] We went on board the Victory, which was the flag ship, & saw the whole of it. We were shewn the spot where Ld Nelson was wounded &, at the bottom of the ship in the cock pit, the wretched hole where he died. The Officers of the ship take all possible pains to keep up the recollection of him & their veneration for his memory. They fired a salute for the Duke on our going on board & again on our leaving the ship, & we were received on our landing by all the officers of the garrison & the whole town who turned out to see the Duke.”
