Geologic Map of El Capitan
This gorgeous image is an exhaustively produced map of the geology of one of the most impressive granite monoliths on Earth: El Capitan, from California’s Yosemite National Park.
To construct this map, a team of scientists spent years surveying the site. They collected Gigapan images where they could see individual units cross-cutting one another, they collected detailed scans of the surface shape using LIDAR, and yes, they climbed and sampled a number of the paths up.
