A “vizier” from an Italian chess set dating to the 1100s. This piece started next to the king in some of the oldest forms of chess and could only move one space diagonally. By the renaissance era, this piece transformed into the queen and was made much more powerful in the game. This change may have come because of the increasing power of queens in politics during the 1400s; some of the earliest evidence of “queen’s chess” with more modern rules comes from Isabella’s Spain.
