That Gandalf quote where he mentions Sauron has all the Mithril now... "Of what they brought to light the Orcs have gathered nearly all, and given it in tribute to Sauron, who covets it."... What was he even doing with it?? Are there mithril-armored orcs out there we just never see? Is he just sitting on it like a greedy little dragon, coveting, having orcs bring him deliveries 'for private use', comforting himself about post-Númenór ugliness with world's most expensive glittering 100% mithril catsuit??

Okay, but you know how like sometimes you have a birthday or a big thing that catches some small presents, and relatives who don’t know you well or coworkers get you something that’s not necessarily your bag but is kind of cool, like “Oh, ha ha, it’s a pen holder that makes it look like a chameleon is climbing your pen instead of holding it, how neat!” and you leave it out to show that you appreciate it and also it is pretty neat?
And then other coworkers or new acquaintances who don’t know you that well see the little tchotchke and think “Oh, this person’s into lizards, cool, I know what to get them at the $10 gift exchange.” and now suddenly you have a water bottle with a bearded dragon in a party hat on the side. But it’s cool, and you needed a new water bottle, so you’re like “Hey, neat! I needed a new water bottle!” and start using it?
And then 5 years later somehow every little thing you have on your desk or carry around on a daily basis has this inexplicable reptile theme and you’ve never been that into reptiles so you’re really not sure when or how you turned into “the reptile person” but it would be super weird and awkward to say something now?
Like that, but you’re an evil overlord and 99.999% of your enormous hordes of underlings never have any actual contact with you and the 0.001% who do usually want away from you as fast as possible because your whole formlessness thing is kind of creeping them out these days, so it’s easier just to keep piling up the mithril than to explain to anyone that you just thought that one tiara was really banging. Plus it really bugs the dwarves that you’ve got it all, so there’s that.
