I like how “Hickey” in the series is basically a reply to “what if Jack from the Titanic was evil?”. The one who gets onto the ship by accident and disappears without leaving a trace, not even a name beyond initials. I think this is what makes his character more remarkable - that no matter how much he tries to be seen and recognized, how much of his own flesh he “puts” under the whip or teeth to be “seen” at least by someone (even a giant man-eating spirit-bear will do), he is inherently invisible because there is no “him” in the first place. The “him” - the “Cornelius Hickey” other men imagine - is in the Regent’s Canal.
There is some weird tragedy to it.
