The fact that Fitzjames is essentially killed by the ghost of the Chinese sniper is an incredibly karmic end for him. This is a guy who spent the lead-up to the story killing people on behalf of the British Empire, facing no consequences, and experiencing no guilt. He talks about setting Chinese people on fire as if that’s an amusing anecdote, and when the Arctic finally begins to collect on the debts incurred by agents of empire, it’s not Tuunbaq or frostbite or mutineers that get him - it’s the old wounds inflicted by a long-dead freedom fighter.
