In 1948, the World Health Organization held its first World Health Assembly, which declared that, starting in 1950, each April 7th would be designated as World Health Day, a global health awareness day with a different theme each year.

World Health Day 2020 has been designated as a day to “celebrate the work of nurses and midwives and remind world leaders of the critical role they play in keeping the world healthy,” a sentiment we can all get behind right now.

This photograph, captured in October 1953, shows some social distancing done wrong at an exhibit from Cleveland’s Health Museum. The museum, which opened in 1940, was America’s first permanent health museum, and was intended to showcase advances in medical and health science and to promote personal and community hygiene.
