Another Thursday, another old scan.
This one was snapped on August 1984 somewhere in the Mojave Desert. Not quite a Stephen Shore shot, but I tried.
My dad and I were in California for the Los Angeles Summer Olympics. After attending a few events, we rented this Lincoln Town Car and explored the desert for a couple of days. It was the epitome of American luxury cars at the time. The seats were softer than your nan’s well-worn sofa. It contained more red velour than a Wild West bordello. It had the turning radius of a city bus. And it averaged 12 miles per gallon … downhill… if you were lucky.
After overheating twice in the middle of nowhere, we still made it back to the airport.
My dad and I used to take these sorts of holidays on our own. We also did family trips with my mum and sisters, but I especially relished these adventures with dad.
And I suppose it’s telling that I am still shooting photos like this.
