USS Oregon (BB-3) after the Battle of Santiago, on July 3, 1898. She was painted military grey for the Spanish-American War and was repainted back to the Great White Fleet color scheme, white and buff, in August 1898 after hostilities ended.

She had just completed modifications following her shakedown cruise.
She will depart later that day to travel to Argentia, Newfoundland. Her first mission was to the North Atlantic and to neutralise the threat of the German Battleship Tirpitz. There were reports of him operating in Norwegian waters. USS Iowa returned the Norfolk Navy Yard on October 25, for two weeks of maintenance.
