Carpenter made the film after seeing, and being blown away by, Tsui Hark’s “Zu: Warriors of the Magical Mountain” (1982). Interestingly, Tsui Hark is still working, and also directed the highest grossing movie of 2021: “The Battle at Lake Changjin.”
