NDP's Mumilaaq Qaqqaq, 25, is Nunavut's next MP
Qaqqaq defeats Conservatives' Leona Aglukkaq and Liberals' Megan Pizzo Lyall
cbc.ca
allthecanadianpolitics

Mumilaaq Qaqqaq, 25, was the youngest candidate running for federal MP in any of the three territories.

Early Tuesday morning, she became one of the youngest MPs in the country.

With 55 of 59 polls counted, the NDP candidate sat at 3,717 votes — nearly 1,000 more than her closest challenger, Liberal Megan Pizzo Lyall.

The margin was large enough that CBC’s decision desk was able to confidently project Qaqqaq’s victory.

Pizzo Lyall called Qaqqaq to congratulate her on her win just after 2 a.m. ET.

Speaking to CBC from Baker Lake, where she watched the results roll in with family and friends, Qaqqaq said the evening was “just how I hoped. A quiet night.”

“I think it’ll take a few days to sink in,” she said. “I’m glad that Nunavut is up for change, and ready for change, and that’s exactly what we’ve been needing for decades.”

“They take away their vote.”

Wait – WTF?!?!?!?

hey-bobert

Oh yeah. In North Dakota you can’t vote if you don’t have a physical address and most people who live on reservations use PO boxes bc their roads and houses aren’t on mail routes. This was literally done last year specifically to disenfranchise native voters.

'I hope he gets impeached,' Singh jokes about Donald Trump
NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh joked that he hopes Donald Trump "gets impeached" when asked Thursday evening what would he first say to the U.S. president if he was prime minister.

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh joked that he hopes Donald Trump “gets impeached” when asked Thursday evening what would he first say to the U.S. president if he was prime minister.

“I hope he gets impeached before I get to speak to him,” said Singh as the crowd cheered. “I say that a little tongue-in-cheek.”

CBC News asked Singh the question during a campaign event in Nanaimo, B.C. ,where Singh was speaking at a town hall.

Singh said it is “disgusting that the president could inflame hatred against people and be so divisive.”

“It’s horrible that someone in a position of power like him would allow for kids to be stripped from the arms of their parents, from their moms,” he said. “That needs to be denounced.”

Singh has already heavily criticized Trump for the U.S. government’s separation of migrant children from their parents in immigration detention centres at the U.S. Mexico border.

“You can’t allow someone like that to do that without any sort of repercussion, without anyone else condemning that,” Singh said last night. “And I condemn it.”

First Polls open up in 34 days for voting for our new Prime Minister, my friends!!!!

Heres the main 3 parties plans and comments on Indigenous affairs, moving forward!!

PLEASE REBLOG THIS EVEN IF YOU’RE NOT CANADIAN!!

This election is MASSIVELY important for Canada, for EVERY person in this country (and those planning to come here from other countries!) who is not a white, cis, hetero, able-bodied middle-aged male.

To every person who has ever reblogged an American politics post: PLEASE reblog Canadian politics for the next month! I know it’s boring and not aesthetic but this is a big deal.

American politics AFFECT CANADA GREATLY! We have seen a massive rise in conservative, alt-right, and islamophobic movements and political parties since 2016. We have seen a rise in violence since 2016. Quebec implemented law 21, an islamophobic law which bans religious symbols for anyone working in public office. This includes public school teachers, meaning children are exposed to a system centered around white-supremacist ideologies. This is super fucking important!

I don’t beg for reblogs, but I cannot express enough how crucial it is for us to go out and vote next month. Please follow @allthecanadianpolitics if you’re Canadian and figure out who you are voting for, how you’re getting there, etc. Plan ahead and GO VOTE!!

The Liberals said they’d adopt UNDRIP during the last election, and here we are still without it. Honestly, they might as well be just as bad as the Conservatives on that point. Meanwhile NDP not only has this but an actual viable plan to not just adopt it but follow it.

Why Canadians won't see ads about climate change
Canada's elections watchdog warned that saying climate change is real could be illegal.
bbc.com
pnwpol

August 19, 2019 | Canada’s election watchdog has warned environmentalists that saying climate change is real could break the law.

The issue arose because one party running in October’s election denies climate change is a threat.

That has led Elections Canada to warn groups that running paid advertisements about climate change could be considered partisan activity.

Advocates called the guidance “ludicrous” and say it will dampen urgent climate discussions.

The UN has called for decisive political action by 2020 to put an end to climate change.

Why is climate change a partisan issue?

Keith Brooks, programme director for advocacy group Environmental Defence, says Elections Canada told him that because one candidate denies that climate change is an issue, any ad urging action on climate change, or calling climate change an emergency, could be considered partisan.

Maxime Bernier, the leader of the People’s Party of Canada, has said numerous times that he does not believe climate change is a crisis.

“There is no climate change urgency in this country,” Mr Bernier said in June.

Mr Bernier split from the Conservative Party of Canada last year to create the People’s Party.

The party’s platform states that “it is an undisputed fact that the world’s climate has always changed and will continue to change”.

“The lobby group that represents Canada’s oil sector has registered for the first time as a political third party, stepping up its advocacy efforts ahead of October’s federal election.

The Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP) told Postmedia it’s not aligned with any specific party. But changes to the Canada Elections Act mean it must register if it’s to discuss, during the writ period, issues that could be associated with a particular candidate.

“Given that energy remains one of the top issues being discussed by political leaders, we registered as a third party to allow us to represent our members on key issues that impact the oil and natural gas industry,” media relations manager Jay Averill said in an email.

UCP urges oil companies to speak up

It’s something Canadians can expect to see more of in the coming months.

On Page 99 of its election platform, the UCP promised it would ask the energy industry to “significantly increase its advocacy efforts.”

Christine Myatt, Premier Jason Kenney’s press secretary, said Kenney and Energy Minister Sonya Savage have met with oil and gas companies over the past several months and encouraged them to talk more about their industry.”

Why the Liberals turned Scheer's same-sex marriage speech into a political weapon | CBC News
Andrew Scheer may calculate that there is no political advantage to be gained by him participating in Pride events. If so, he shouldn't be surprised when his opponents use his past words on same-sex marriage against him.

With the Canadian election coming up very soon (October) please remember to reblog Canadian election posts so other Canadians can access it! A lot of American’s use this site and don’t reblog Canadian political issues (Or outright ignoring them) and we really need to get information out this year, because this election could do one of three things for us:

It could keep our current government, which has failed us badly (Not likely to happen)
It could land us with a literal white supremacist (Likely.)
It could give us a leader who would be the first poc and the first non-Xian to be elected to the office of prime minister, with a history of fighting for the people who will likely lead us very well (Possible, but not a guarantee)

Please help us get that third option (or at least avoid the middle one, because yes, Andrew Scheer is WORSE than Trump and I need y’all to really understand that)

apersnicketylemon

I am genuinely not kidding about Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer being WORSE than Donald Trump. He is AS BIGOTED if not more, while also being a competent politician who understands the system he is playing in with a follower base that votes so blindly they would cast a ballot for a dead goat if it ran for the Conservative party.

Please, please reblog this and bear it in mind, this election is VERY IMPORTANT and MUCH SOONER than yours is.
