Doug Ford is attacking Liberal Arts and Humanities by making 60% of funding for post secondary schools dependent on ‘skills and job outcomes and economic and community impact’.

This is VERY VERY bad for Ontario.

rowdyravenclaw

Actively attempting to make sure liberal arts are squashed is actively trying make sure there is a less liberal, less socially conscious public. Business and (most of) STEM isn’t focused on humanity the way the liberal arts are. This is utter bullshit. What’s especially worrying is that political science is in that department, making politics increasingly inaccessible to any bit the privileged. This has far longer term ramifications than most people realize

Trump says he’s going to end constitutional right to birthright citizenship with an executive order

Trump intends to sign an executive order ending “birthright citizenship”—the right of people born in the United States to citizenship irrespective of their parent’s status, as guaranteed by the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

MSNBC:

Trump, in an interview with Axios, part of which aired Tuesday morning, said birthright citizenship “has to end” and that it would, “with an executive order.”

“We’re the only country in the world where a person comes in, has a baby, and the baby is essentially a citizen of the United States for 85 years with all of those benefits,” Trump said. “It’s ridiculous. It’s ridiculous. And it has to end.”

“It’s in the process. It’ll happen with an executive order,” he said, adding that he’s consulted with the White House counsel on the matter.

It’s annoying to watch him claim that the U.S. is the only country to have birthright citizenship and the Axios interviewers just sit there slack-jawed and clueless. I know we can’t be expected to rebut every dumb lie instantly but… we’re not sending our best.

“Repealing” the 14th Amendment, which gave citizenship to former slaves after the Civil War, by Executive Order… that surely won’t be used to target the citizenship of anyone but the children of those scary immigrants that he keeps lying about, right?

WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCKING HELL.

For my Canadian friends (cc. @allthecanadianpolitics), the Conservative Party of Canada recently voted to add abolishing birthright citizenship to their party platform. So this isn’t just an American issue.

Text from tweets above:

Jesse Wente:

If this upsets you, contact the minister of education for Ontario, Lisa Thompson. Here’s all of her contact information:

Julie Boulton‏:

@BobRae48 @JAWalker @FacingCanada @CBCIndigenous @CBCNews - this needs to be shared widely and publicly. Cancelling the #TRC on a Friday afternoon was done purposefully so that it would be ignored and avoid public scrutiny. Please help to challenge this.

Julie Boulton:

Ontario Teacher Friends -get loud! Get the word out. Use #TeachersforTRC - let @fordnation @MacLeodLisa know this is unacceptable and teachers will fight to support the important work that #Indigenous educators, Elders and knowledge keepers are sharing with us. Get loud!

Julie S. Lalonde‏:

They are literally going to LOSE MONEY on cancelling people’s travel and accommodations and argue that they are the “tightening the public purse” party.

When you’re so racist, you’d rather lose money than listen to experts for a few days.

 Fucking unbelievable.

Aylan Couchie:

Two separate friends from my rez have also posted on FB that each of their upcoming TRC/reconciliation contracts have been cancelled as well. I assume this is only the beginning of @fordnation’s attack on Indigenous people. #Reconciliation #TRC #IdleNoMore

Rick’s Rant - Jason Kenney

Also a reminder that Jason Kenney is trying to get elected to Alberta’s legislature. On December 14th, he will run in a by-election in Calgary. So if you want to prevent him from getting elected and you live in Calgary, here’s some information:

I’ve been waiting a long time for a major political party in Canada to push for free university tuition & debt relief. Glad to finally see some movement in this direction from the NDP.

Student debt, while not quite as severe as in the USA, is a serious problem for my generation. I’m almost $30,000 in debt, and that’s likely going to rise before I graduate.

“Within just four days of welcoming our new prime minister, he has notified Obama that Canada will be pulling out of the bombing campaign in the middle east, he has put forth a motion to remove the ban that prohibits gay men from donating blood, he has motioned to have medical marijuana dispensaries placed in every major Canadian city, which will stimulate the economy, and has launched an official nation-wide search for the missing and murdered First Nations women and girls. Justin Trudeau has accomplished in four days what our former prime minister couldn’t do in 10 years.
For the first time in many years, Canada is in the forefront of international news just in this one week following the election. The world loves him…and for the first time in a long time, I am proud to be a Canadian.”
