Unnatural Selection: Welcome to our state-of-the-art 24th Century Federation Genetic Research Station, with a central console that includes:

- A Microphone
- An honest-to-god console phone with curlycord.
- A desk lamp that likely is using a standard 40 or 60 watt soft white bulb.
- A Qwerty Keyboard in this age of LCARS
- I’m not even that concerned about the CRT screens (TNG was still full of them) but the 6 analog picture twist dials underneath….

Is it any wonder that their experiments fucked up?!??!

Someone has notes on the Star Trek: The Next Generation production design hehe   (the mic is odd yes but the rest is sexy as hell)

Looks like set design phoned this ep in.

Looks like a repainted and reconfigured version of this console from Modern Props, who supplied a lot of the generic lab gear seen in not only Star Trek but hundreds of other TV shows and movies. (Sadly, Modern Props went out of business in 2020 after 42 years.)

It’s listed as a “video console”. In the catalog shot it has a couple of small mixers, a reel-to-reel tape deck, possibly a cassette deck. I have no idea what the two center panels do if they are real gear, they might just be fabricated blinkenlights for TV.

It seems to be an actual broadcast console that has three bays for standard 19″ studio rackmount equipment, plus a telephone holder. This kind of setup is standard for small radio or TV studios or for security monitor stations.

In the episode, you can see the two center rackmount panels are there, just moved to different positions, and the other panels replaced with rackmount video monitors. Plus an Apple Standard Keyboard from an 80s-vintage Macintosh.
