The Briar Patch

The Briar Patch, known to Klingons as Klach D'kel Brakt, was a region in Sector 441, in the Beta Quadrant.

The colloquial “Briar Patch” name used in the Federation was first coined by criminal geneticist Arik Soong in the 22nd century, a reference to an Earth story involving Br'er Rabbit.

This region was known for containing dangerous space matter, including the remains of supernovae, false vacuum fluctuations, metaphasic radiation, and at least two habitable planets, one of which was settled by the Ba'ku. Ships in the vicinity had to travel at less than one-third impulse power to avoid overheating the vessel’s impulse manifolds. According to admiral Dougherty, ships entering the region preferably were specially fitted for it. (via Memory-Alpha)

Background: In this version of events, the transfer of Data’s memories into B-4 positronic matrix allowed Data to live on in B-4′s body, imprinted over the existing neural net. Data resumed his Starfleet duties, eventually becoming Captain of the Enterprise.

In 2387 the Enterprise picked up a distress call from Ambassador Spock, from the Kimben System, just inside Romulan space. Data took the Enterprise in, disabling three Reman starships attacking Romulan mining vessel and disarming the Reman boarding parties by beaming their weapons away. Data beamed aboard the Narada once the Reman boarding parties had been subdued. Data offered assistance to repair the Romulan vessel as well as confiscating the decalithium from the Remans and turning it over the Romulans (necessary for the creation of Red Matter). The Enterprise would take Nero and Spock to Vulcan, escorting the Narada. Data informed Spock discreetly that Starfleet had authorised a covert mission to the Hobus system (in Romulan space) to drill the star in an attempt to prevent the upcoming nova.

Once on Vulcans, the Science Council and Senate debated and refused to help, not wanting to turn their biggest scientific secrets to the Romulan Empire. Nero was frustrated but agreed to leave the decalithium behind on the Enterprise so that Captain Data and Ambassador Picard could attempt to sway the Vulcans while the Narada headed home to Romulus to save as many as they could.

After the destruction of Romulus and Nero’s ship cutting a swath through Klingon vessels the Enterprise (with Ambassador Picard aboard) departed Romulus to take on Nero, while Spock piloted the Jellyfish to Hobus to stop the star’s threat to the galaxy.

They arrived too late to help the Klingon fleet but Nero was waiting for them there, offering to send Worf, barely alive, back to them. Data took the calculated risk to taking the shields down long enough to retrieve Worf. They got him back but the Enterprise took heavy damage, their warp drive disabled while Nero took his ship to face Spock at Hobus.

By the time their engines had been restored and they arrived at Hobus, they found the black hole had consumed the supernova, and that there was no trace of the Narada or Jellyfish. Both were presumed destroyed.
