Sneak peek at the re-release of season 1 of Discovery.
I can’t believe I hadn’t heard of Goncharov (1973) before!!!! I watched it last night and was blown away. Truly ahead of its time.
I got the background text from @beelzeebub ‘s poster :)

“Time isn't like pearls, Katya. You can't buy more."
“No one can tell me what I can and can't buy."
I'm loving that Goncharov is finally getting the attention it deserves but I can't believe no one's brought up the Art Deco character posters made for the limited California release....I've only been able to find the Katya one so far but the others have got to be out there somewhere!
GONCHAROV (1973) dir. Martin Scorsese
“It funny because for many years people thought Goncharov was the main antagonist of the film, after all, he’s the one everyone’s out to get, right? But it seems people are starting to understand that in actual fact, it is time that is the main adversary in this story. There’s never enough of it and that torments a lot of characters, especially Goncharov, because he’s fighting so desperately to find his place in a world that is so keen on keeping him ostracized.”

Star Trek VI’s focus on the passage of time, and the trappings of time—the weight of anger and bigotry Kirk has accumulated; the distance that has grown between Kirk and Spock without either meaning it to happen—are undeniably Goncharev inspired. And yet, even while unfolding as a partial retelling of Goncharev, the movie is ultimately a refutation. Goncharev [Kirk] lives. He lives because he is finally able to let go of JUST A LITTLE bit of his past, unlike the original Goncharev. He and Andrey [Spock] can thus reconcile in life, not death. What they face beyond the bleak ending of the characters they’re drawn from? The Undiscovered Country, of course..
