While I haven’t been watching this show (I read the first novel and thought it was absolute rubbish, which made me sad because I like Guillermo del Toro’s films very much - it was just so schlocky and implausible and the characterisations were so poor, except for the one character who was obviously earmarked in del Toro’s mind as ‘Role for Ron Perlman’ - the ratcatcher) I really like how much this sequence reminds me of the sequence of Phibes making himself up to appear normal in The Abominable Doctor Phibes. 

The key difference being that in Phibes, the camera allows us to see that he’s putting on artificial facial features and make-up, but doesn’t show us his face until they’re all on, so we’re left to speculate on what he actually looks like until the revelation near the end of the movie, which is frankly disappointing and looks like his head is made of pâpier-maché.
