Post Jeremiah thoughts

and I’m done with my Jeremiah Rewatch! The show is definitely problematic. Some say it doesn’t stick close to the source material or is far off the mark in its interpretation (I’ve never read the comic book series so I can’t judge that). The show gets bogged down under the weight of its mission from time to time and the back half of S1 has large forgettable chunks.

And then there’s the treatment of its women. The three main characters we follow are Jeremiah, Kurdy and Markus. Each has a lover that is killed for bring the story and/or their development forward. Markus’ is Meghan and the least egregious of the three. As a carrier of the Big Death her arc has an inevitable conclusion and I can give a pass on it. She’s been stuck in isolation for fifteen years, with Marcus as her jailor/savior. They have a sort of relationship and a love for each other. In the end she’s brought out of Isolation so she can infect Valhalla Sector and is pretty much trapped there while everyone’s dying around her. She can’t risk infecting others and she’s not going back to her cage and jumps to her death, with Markus trying to talk her out of it.

Kurdy had Elizabeth, whose previous love was killed somewhat indirectly because of Jeremiah and Kurdy’s action. He lusted and got to know her and they began something, then she got into harm’s way she got killed and he blamed jeremiah and he carried that blame for the first half of S2 and it changed the dynamics. All very Kurdy related.

Jeremiah had Libby, his dad’s young assistant at Valhalla Sector, who turned out to be a double agent (and that was never satisfactorily explained how that even happened given Valhalla Sector) working for Simm and killed by Mr. Smith who blamed Simm and fueled Jeremiah’s rage, determination, anger and self destructive tendencies. hers was the most terrible just because her turning over seemed a) out of the blue b) implausible given what we knew.

Oh and then there’s Erin, Markus’ 2nd in command who really aside from seemingly being well organized doesn’t have much defining characteristics and isn’t her twin sister. She’s never really given anything meaty to do, hell Lee had a whole redemption arc. And the finale threw her in with Markus.

Aside from the above mentioned I should point out that Theo, a recurring who started out as an antagonizer probably had the most to do outside of the boys club, with setting up her town, being kicked out and forcing her way back in and being pregnant and wanting a better world for her child.

There’s great stories in there, Valhalla Sector, the remnants of the old US Goverment was handled with a good amount of dread, guests like MIchael Rooker really helped solidify the threat. Kurdy’s self discovery was great, and most of the interactions between Jeremiah and his Dad (oh yeah, in all the time we barely hear about Jeremiah looking for his mom, we see her and we get to see what happens, but it’s all about Dear Dad.)

Season 2 introduced the Mythos of Daniel and we got to see what a post-American cult of leadership might look at and it was a bit frightening. There was a bit of a letdown that it was a splinter group from Valhalla Sector behind it….

Favourite Episodes:

Firewall, City of Roses, Letters from the Other Side Part 1 & 2, And the Ground Sown with Salt. Tripwire, Out of the Ashes, Voices in the Dark, The Face in the Mirror
