I was in a Hallmark Store and saw they had released their 2021 ornament collection (it’s Christmas in July for Hallmark you know). Anyway, this is their new Star Trek set. My first thought was WHERE THE FRIGGIN HELL IS MCCOY?!!!!! Pardon my rage, I’ll get back to that issue in a moment.
This set is based on the episode “Mirror, Mirror”. Each ornament cost $34.99. The Enterprise is a big plastic Christmas tree topper. It costs a whopping $149.99!
Push the button on any ornament and they say actual spoken words from the episode. It’s pretty cool. They each speak individually, but when they are all connected via their special power cord (no doubt extra money), they converse with each other. So you have to buy the entire set to make it work (shown in the video here).
The whole “show” lasts a very long four minutes. I stood in the aisle taking this video (turn on sound). Sorry it’s a bit shaky... I had to move out of the way of other customers. And the store was playing music, so you hear that too.
I wonder if the actors or their estates got any money from this, or did it all go to CBS/Paramount?
The Sulu and Uhura figures are excellent representations. Kirk looks awful, Spock looks like any ‘ol Vulcan with a goatee and Chekov kinda sorta looks like Chekov, but also Davy Jones of The Monkees (which oddly enough, is why Walter Koenig was hired on Star Trek in the first place— to pull in the younger audience). But now I’m off topic....
Back to the lack of a McCoy figure, I was really upset that they left out McCoy (and Scotty). A few days after I saw the display, I checked and McCoy and Scotty are coming out in 2022. I’m only slightly semi-appeased by that.
If the McCoy figure looks great I may buy him, even at $35. The whole set would be over $400 though. Ixnay on that.
