One was the first high-profile, public gay magazine, published monthly in Los Angeles for a national audience from 1952-67 by One, Incorporated (a mixed-sex organization). One’s longtime art director, from 1954-63, was Joan Corbin, who used the pseudonym Eve Elloree for the magazine (as did many of One’s writers and editors).
The October 1954 issue of One was seized by the Los Angeles postmaster, who charged it with being obscene (sending obscene materials through the mail was a crime at the time). After a long (and oftentimes losing) legal battle, One finally won its case at the Supreme Court in 1958, who ruled that it was not obscene and ordered the postmaster to allow distribution through the mail. It was a major legal win for the gay rights movement.
