"My task now is, [with] all of the truth, all of the evidence I have … to preserve the records,” said Carmelo Victor A Crisanto, the executive director of the Human Rights Violations Victims’ Memorial Commission, which manages the archives. He is focused on digitising victims’ case files so that they are protected and more widely accessible to researchers.

Crisanto’s work has recently taken on even greater urgency. Last month, Ferdinand Marcos Jr, the son and namesake of the late dictator, won a landslide victory in the presidential election, following a surge of online disinformation that glorified his father’s rule, which was marked by an abuse of power after declaring martial law.

Academics, activists and survivors of Marcos Sr’s regime fear further distortion of history – and even the disappearance of historical records – once the family returns to office.

In the weeks after the election result, many have rushed to protect the country’s past. Shops have sold out of history books that depict the plunder and abuses that occurred during the Marcos era, while 1,700 academics have signed a manifesto promising to protect the truth and academic freedom.

Francis Gealogo, a professor of history at Ateneo de Manila University, who helped organise the manifesto, compared his country’s rush to preserve its history to panic buying food. “After the elections, we had the unusual phenomenon of panic buying of books regarding martial law,” he said.

Now that the Terror Bill has been signed into law and will take effect in 15 days, a little reminder for my PH mutuals:

  • Set your social media to private
  • Do a clean up of your public posts
  • Block everyone of your friends who have voiced pro-government sentiments. You don’t know who will sell you out.
  • Do a check of your facebook groups. If you’re part of anti-admin groups, make sure it’s legit and not a fake group used to redtag.
  • Increase your email security
  • Stop signing petitions vs terror bill on change.org as this is what they’re using to redtag (remember the influx of fake accounts? Yeah)
  • Instead, send emails to your representatives using a vpn
  • Have your lawyer’s number on standby
  • Be aware of your rights (i will post a refresher here later on)
  • Look out for your friends and family

A stunning photo showing Filipinos practicing social distancing during a protest to #JunkTerrorBill #JunkTerrorBillNow

Because Filipinos aren’t undisciplined. They simply know what rules protect them and what do not.

Also shown: Protesters kneeling in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement.

MORE PHOTOS AND SOURCE CAN BE FOUND IN THE REBLOG BECAUSE TUMBLR HIDES POSTS WITH LINKS. If you have Facebook, share the original post there, which has more amazing photos of the protest.

the philippines is trending right now and i hope y’all know it’s because our senate passed an “anti terrorism” bill, which basically targets the critics and opposition leaders of the current government. it may impede our freedom of speech and they could basically “allow the police and military to conduct a 60-day surveillance on suspected terrorists and compelling telecommunication companies to disclose their calls and messages”.

on top of this, the philippines doesn’t have mass testing available yet and the enhanced community quarantine has technically ended today, which means thousands of workers are now forced to go to work (even without a proper public transportation system). my mother has just gone to work at the airport and i’m terrified for her safety and health. the coronavirus cases have been increasing constantly and we’re still in the first wave.

update: this is what manila looks like after lifting the enhanced community quarantine

translation: we need your help. our families are starving. we are jeepney drivers and we don’t receive any aid from the social amelioration subsidy (or financial aid from the government)

the last thing we need is our government prioritizing a bill that could threaten normal citizens who are complaining about their incompetence, especially in the middle of a pandemic. i know so many things are happening in your own countries, but please keep us in your minds and prayers. 💗 please also check out this info sheet as to how you can help! ⬇️

heres some random updates so you can get a grasp on whats happening here in the philippines:

  • professors are urging their students to let them know if theyre not gonna come to class so theyll know that theyre still alive
  • parents are telling their kids not to come home late, or if they will, to take an uber even though its priced like 5x more
  • people are sharing constitutional rights on twitter, to teach everyone what to say to the popos just in case
  • nobody trusts the police anymore
  • police have a QUOTA of “drug addicts” they need to kill
  • almost 13k dead without due process, but chines drug lords and presidents son who were involved in a drug smuggling worth 6 billion are still walking free
  • all it takes is a facebook rumor to put you on the hit list
  • politicians who are criticizing the administration are being impeached
  • politicians who love the administration admit that their duty is to the president, NOT to the people
  • theres been talks in extending the presidents term
  • It literally feels like an unofficial dictatorship
