The Final couple Cataclysm chapters strongly suggest that Ursus, the Ape Army General, was either working with or was one of the mutants, and precipitated the final conflict. It’s certainly an interesting angle and I wonder if it’s picked up in the Ursus Six-Parter that came out much more recently.
Dr. Milo, the Third Ape who returned with Cornelius and Zira to the 1970s, and his attempts to get Taylor’s sunken ship working again.
