As some of you guys know I’m going to be a poll worker on Tuesday for the California Primary. I just wanted to pass along some information that I’ve learned during the training process. This is information might be specific to my county, but I figure it’s a good general rule of thumb for the rest of California.

  1. DO NOT wear any political paraphernalia when you go to the polls. It’s electioneering and not allowed within 100 feet of a polling place. You’ve made it all the way there so make sure you get to vote.
  2. DO NOT take out your cell phone inside the polling place. If you take pictures of your ballot, it will not be counted. You’ve made it this far, don’t fuck it up now.
  3. If you have a mail-in ballot, you can still fill it out and bring it to your polling place and turn it in there. If you don’t have the envelope they can provide one to you.
  4. If you signed up to vote by mail but didn’t mail your ballot, you can vote at your polling place on Tuesday but you must bring in your mail-in ballot with you. If you don’t have it you can still vote, but you’ll be given a provisional ballot.
  5. Voter registration cards are available at your polling place which means you can change your address or your party affiliation or whatever. Just fill the card out and give it to the clerk. They’ll turn it in for you. Easy peasy.
  6. Polling places open at 7am and close at 8pm. If you are in line before 8pm you will be allowed to vote. DON’T GET OUT OF LINE.

Those are the highlights I can think of. Please also keep in mind that the mainstream media will be anointing Hillary Clinton at 5pm Pacific when the polls close in New Jersey regardless of the outcome of the voting there.  Whomever your are voting for, don’t let this dissuade you from voting. YOUR VOTE MATTERS. (If you’re a Sanders supporter, it’s you they’re trying to keep from voting. Don’t let them win. If you’re a Clinton supporter, your candidate is going to need to prove to the super delegates that she’s got momentum and has it in her to win the biggest state in the union.) In addition to the Presidential primary, there are oodles of down ballot primaries, appointments and ballot measures that deserve your attention.

If I’ve forgotten anything, please add it in.

Additionally, looking through the sample ballot and voter information pamphlet and would ask you to also keep in mind the following: No Party Preference voters can ask for the following ballots - Democrat, American Independent Party, Libertarian or a No Party Preference ballot. It’s super important to note that the NPP ballot does not include Presidential candidates. The sample ballot in my county pamphlet only includes US Senator, US Representative, State Senator, State Assembly and County Supervisors. Make sure you receive the ballot of your choosing. If your polling place as run out of appropriate ballots, wait until more arrive.

Remember you can vote today at your County Registrar of Voters office as well.

Happy voting!

The MPAA lobbyist who wrote SOPA will help draft the Democratic Party platform

“Hollywood” Howard Berman, a former US Congressman-turned-MPAA-lobbyist is one of the 15-member panel selected by the Democratic Party establishment to draft the party’s platform for this summer’s convention.

Berman took titanic amounts of money from the entertainment industry during his term in office and was rewarded with a cushy, high-paid job as a lobbyist for the movie studios when he left Congress. He was also one of the main forces pushing for ACTA, one of those disastrous trade agreements the Democratic Party says it no longer supports.

Amazingly, SOPA wasn’t the stupidest copyright law he drafted – just the one that got the furthest. There was that time he proposed making it legal for entertainment companies to hack any computer on the Internet if they thought it was involved in piracy and face no consequences if they attacked an innocent person or caused harm.

This article is just wonderful.

lazyscience

“America likes to brand itself as “the land of opportunity,” but from elsewhere in the world, the cost of that opportunity is shockingly high. It looks more and more like the land of oligarchy, where those with privilege move higher and higher up more and more easily, and those below have to scramble with all their might, sacrificing everything and never making a bad decision to even have a shot at being upper middle class. And if you don’t get there? Well you shouldn’t have made that bad decision that one time, it’s your fault. Christ, even your poster boys for innovation and striking it rich—Mark Zuckerberg and Bill Gates—went to freaking Harvard. Land of opportunity, huh? Yeah, when the next Facebook is founded by a guy working out of a college dorm at Indiana State, you might be able to say that without irony.”

I realize this article is likely preaching to the choir, but I can always use another reminder just how fucked this country is.
