The XB-70 was capable of going Mach 3 and was to replace the B-52 as America’s main strategic nuclear bomber. But the arrival of surface to air missiles made it obsolete before it could be put into service.

The Boeing YC-14 Transporter Prototype had its engines mounted so that the exhaust would blow over the wings to create lift, giving it Short Takeoff capability. Why doesn’t any production aircraft use this?
NSU Ro 80, 1971, by Pininfarina. Another 50 year old concept that remained in 1971. Volkswagen owned NSU by this time and had made it part of Audi, the rotary-engined Ro 80 would remain in production until 1977. But Audi's plans were for the Ro 80 to be replaced by second generation 100 and beyond a few rotary engined Audi prototypes, for the troublesome Wankel engine to be abandoned. Paulo Martin's elegant saloon, with it suicide doors and removable roof panel, is now housed in Audi's museum.
