More seriously though, this is one of the first instances where Lister gets actual proof of just how messed up Rimmer’s childhood was.  He probably thought he was exaggerating before.

Lister/Rimmer + Canon  Part 3

• Lister and Rimmer’s relationship is often compared to a marriage. The bickering, the ‘best years of my death’ line, and when Rimmer moves in with his double in Me². Lister not only refers to Rimmer II as ‘Mrs Rimmer’, he also celebrates being a bachelor again. 
• There is an undue amount of Rimmer feminising Lister (probably to make his feelings more acceptable because he’s really repressed). 
• Rimmer gets jealous of Lister sleeping with literally anyone/thing (up to and including his own female opposite and AR machine computer sprites).

Oh my god. I’ve always thought that the look on Lister’s face in that first gif just sums up his feelings about Rimmer completely. It’s a mixture of bewilderment, amusement, pity, exasperation but underneath it all there’s a real gentle affection too. I’ve never been able to capture it in a screenshot though.

Lister/Rimmer + Canon  Part 1

• What boosts Rimmer’s self-esteem enough to allow them to escape the terraformed planet? The idea that Lister loves him, would never abandon him, and would always come and rescue him.
• The only thing that drives Rimmer to suicide is hallucinating that Lister is his half-brother. The ‘Rimmer no longer has an excuse for his failings as they had the same upbringing’ explanation is bullshit. Rimmer’s full-brothers in reality are all way more successful than he is (as far as he knows), and it never drives him to despair. 

Brother Lister: Have I told thee today how much I love thee? How much my heart glimmers like a newborn star when I gaze upon thine countenance?

Brother Rimmer: Thy love refreshes and cleanses me like a babbling mountain stream.

Awww.  The Highs have grown on me a lot. :)
