Houston Chronicle: The mother of Sandra Bland filed a federal lawsuit Tuesday against the Texas Department of Public Safety trooper and several others she deems responsible for the death of her 28-year-old daughter at the Waller County Jail in mid-July.
I’m so exhausted with the notion that if #SandraBland would have kept quiet she would have been alive. That as black people we need to be “smart” and listen. That she should have never mouthed off at the officer. All of this respectability politics nonsense ignores the civil rights movement. It ignores changes that came about as a result of not listening. What would happen if civil rights leaders would have listened? Would have not mouthed off? Would have kept quiet?
At what point did we convince ourselves it is our duty to keep an officer from killing us even when we’ve done nothing wrong? At one point did we take on this burden?

1. She should never have been arrested. She changed lanes to let the officer pass her and forgot to signal. THIS ALL HAPPENED FROM NOT SIGNALING.
2. Her mugshot is in a jumpsuit (no others from that police department were) and she is clearly laying on the floor with what looks like tears down her face and one arm extended. Many people even claim she is dead in the photo because her eyes look lifeless. She knew how to take a picture, and she always had her head and eyes pointed at the camera
3. The officers claim she hung herself off a 5 ft tall wall with a plastic bag from a trashcan.
4. She is 6 ft tall…trashcans are not supposed to be in jail cells…in the “untampered” picture of her cell after she was “found” the trashcan has a bag in it ???
5. The dashcam footage made public has been edited by the officers – even a director, Ava DuVernay believes it is edited, and that is what she does for a living.
6. Her mental health evaluations show inconsistencies as if she was not the one filling them out.
7. This was a woman knew her rights and was threatening to sue. You can hear in the arrest video that she cannot WAIT to get out so she can talk with her lawyer. How did that change in 3 days?
8. Her family and attorney who heard from her while in police custody says she spoke NOTHING of suicide
9. She was an activist and you can find videos showing her spirit. She wanted to change the system, end police brutality, push forward the Black Lives Matter movement.
10. It is being shown the officer who escalated the situation and arrested her lied multiples times in his account of what happened.
11. Now her attorney is asking for her body back because the original autopsy was inadequate.
unless these cops are complete fucking idiots and screwed up every little thing on accident and accidentally killed her because their brains cannot function properly, then she was murdered and they should all be jailed for the rest of their lives.
