1782: Robert Burns writes ‘Comin’ Thro’ the Rye’, a lyrical poem referencing the body of protagonist ‘Jenny’ (reportedly folklore’s ‘Jenny of Dalry’) during a sexually explicit encounter in ‘the rye’.

1951: J.D. Salinger writes ‘The Catcher in the Rye’, a novel in which protagonist Holden Caulfield builds a personal philosophy around a misremembered line from the aforementioned poem, picturing himself protecting innocent children playing in a field of rye, by catching them before they fall off a nearby cliff.

1980: Mark David Chapman is inspired by the character of Holden Caulfield to murder John Lennon outside his residence in New York.

1981: Three months later, John Hinckley Jr., reportedly influenced by Lennon’s murder (and Hinckley’s obsession with actress, Jodie Foster), attempts to assassinate President Ronald Reagan.

1991: Although initially opposed to calls for increased handgun control following Lennon’s death, Reagan cited this attempt on his life when endorsing the Brady Bill.

1993: President Bill Clinton signs the Brady Act into law, named for James Brady, Reagan’s assistant who was shot during the assassination attempt.
