Captain Styles: Captain, U.S.S. Excelsior. Oversaw the final stages of trial runs in 2285. Pursued the Enterprise when Kirk stole her out of spacedock. Unbeknownst to him is Chief Engineer had sabotaged both the transwarp drive and tractor beam. When he attempted to pursue the Enterprise in transwarp, the ship suffered debilitating failures, stranding them in Earth orbit and allowing the Enterprise to escape. Styles was reassigned shortly afterwards.

Captain J.T. Esteban: Captain of the science vessel U.S.S. Grissom. Assigned to chart the new Genesis Planet with the help of David Marcus - one of the project’s surviving scientists - and Lt. Saavik, a newly minted Starfleet officer who had previous experience with the Genesis Project. The Mutura Sector was restricted by Starfleet during this survey to all other ships except Grissom. Esteban authorized an away team of Saavik and Marcus when they detected life forms near Spock’s burial torpedo. They found microbes that had mutated and a regenerated young Spock who had no memories and was basically an empty vessel. Esteban tried to reach out to Starfleet for orders but they were jammed by a Klingon vessel. They were outmatched by this Bird of Prey and even with shields on they were destroyed in a single shot. Everyone aboard Grissom perished, save for Saavik and Marcus on the planet’s surface.
