Captain Will Decker: Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. Enterprise. Temporarily reduced in rank to Commander and First Officer when Admiral Kirk took command during the V’Ger crisis. The death of Commander Sonak also meant he was the ship’s science officer. Decker and Kirk clashed a lot with the latter’s lack of experience with the refitted Enterprise and the near-disastrous first warp trial. The arrival of Commander Spock relieved some pressure but Decker blamed Kirk for the apparent death of Lt. Ilia. Kirk assigned Decker to the V’Ger probe that took the form of Ilia in the hopes that her brain patterns, which had also been preserved, would emerge. Decker ultimately sacrificed himself when they got to the heart of V’Ger, and it wanted to meet its creator, which Decker meant joining with the Ilia. The joining created a new life form. Kirk listed both Decker and Ilia as missing.
