Things I’ve learned so far from the TMP novelization:

The “male-surname custom” (taking your father’s last name) has become rare among humans except those in Starfleet.

I’ve already mentioned Lori Ciana, a character that recurs in the Lost Years novels that took Kirk away from the Enterprise and planetside, was created in this novel. She’s also the other person who dies on the transporter platform with Cmdr Sonak.

I’m not sure I would described Scotty’s look to Kirk when he first sees him as “pleased surprise.” Troubled and concerned come to mind.

Disco Bones is described more as Woodsman Bones: “He was heavily bearded and wore work-shirt and pants, heavy boots, all of which fitted Kirk’s information that McCoy had become something of a recluse…”

Those beltless buckles on their uniforms monitor their lifesigns and transmits them to sickbay

The moon served as a base of operation for ancient space voyagers who conducted genetic experiments with Earth’s early life forms a million years before human life evolved.

Decker decorated Kirk’s cabin with all “beige and rust” Though he didn’t mind the new larger bed.

The new version of the Director’s Edition. First released in 2000 the movie was more in line with Robert Wise’s vision including a tightened pacing and updated effects. It was released today on Paramount+ (and will get a BluRay 4k release in September).

I enjoyed the Director’s Edition (owned it) and its been a few years since I sat down and watched this version (the rips that were out there….reflected the dvd-only quality so I usually stuck with the newer releases of it, but I’m still keeping that version too).

I’ve also gone over some of the vfx updates the 2000 director’s edition did here and here.

I’ll watch this more in detail later (maybe even today) but here’s once scene difference: from the main release of The Motion Picture on Blu-Ray (top), the 2000 director’s edition (middle) and the new 4k Director’s edition (bottom).

The 2000 director’s edition’s posited that this scene, given that we’re rear facing, should include the nacelle, so we’re somewhere on the saucer rim. Now they’ve gone one step further and redone the windows (and removed half a wall) to match an exact area of the ship and the nacelle now appear lower as this probably corresponds to the rear of the bridge module, below the docking port behind the bridge:
