Most everybody have seen a passage from James Fitzjames’s diary describing Goodsir, always in ecstasies over one sea critter or the other, but nobody (that I have seen) has posted his gem of a portrait of Dr. Stanley, and trust me, you need this in your life:

“Giving one upleasant ideas that he would not mind cutting one’s leg off immediately-if not sooner”? That’s our Dr. Stanley alright.

Also, reposting his description of Dr. Goodsir just because I need it on my dash on a regular basis, and so do you.

TL;DR version: James Fitzjames was probably a joy to be around.
