#The Best of Both Worlds Part 1

Shelby is young Riker! It’s time to separate the ship!!

Riker: No, I’m older and more experienced *nervous fidgeting* I don’t want to the separate the ship at the drop of a hat *heavy breathing* I mean it’s not like it’s been two years since I last separated the ship *telltale sweat* I mean…the last time it wasn’t even me.

Viscerally I’ve always liked this scene. The music is appropriately eerie, you’re not sure what to expect and the crater where the town should be is a powerful image.

But, when my mind starts picking at it…

So the sensors pick up the fact that the environment is “safe for transport” and that “there are no life signs” yet you can’t pick up a big honking crater. Now I could buy interference obscuring their sensors but then this might be a completely different scene where they might just shuttle in (more expensive than the matte painting there). This would pretty much be reduced to a bridge sequence then.

Then, as if that wasn’t enough, once they’re on the surface Riker asks O’Brien to verify their coordinates. O’Brien confirms that they’re in the center of town. No you’re not you’re at the edge of town, if you were in the centre you would have either beamed at the bottom of the crater or, seeing as no one seem to know how to operate the sensors this early in the episode, have beamed over the crater where the town should be and fallen to their death.
