Never mind development aid, there’s no point in attempting to grow cotton since the US subsidises its own cotton production so much (and in clear contravention of WTO rules) that it’s impossible to keep your prices competitive. The US government spends billions of taxpayer dollars every year propping up a handful of American industrial farmers (a small circle that incidentally includes known white supremacist Richard Spencer, the beneficiary of millions of taxpayer dollars in cotton subsidies), a practice that has condemned millions of farmers in the West African cotton belt (Mali, Benin, Burkina Faso and Chad) to surviving on under $2/day.
