God needs to work on getting that poor woman a desk.

With Scully seeing herself and William being at the Unremarkable House, I think it makes it pretty clear that she never wanted to leave willingly, that she never expected her and Mulder to be apart. This also shows how Mulder’s depression was most likely caused by trying to put William behind him but he never could. The episode seems to explain subtely what caused Mulder and Scully to grow apart, how the loss of William affected them and how they reacted in very different ways. But through those visions, both have come to accept what they kept trying to convince themselves of for so long, which is that they did what was best for their son.
